Modern Band - MUS415

Learning Recommendations: Students should have one semester of guitar or piano class or similar experience singing or playing an instrument. Consult with the teacher if unsure about readiness.

General Description: Modern Band is a popular music ensemble open to students who play guitar, bass, piano, drums, strings, woodwinds, brass, or sing. The course focuses on performing rock, pop, country, hip hop, R&B, and Latin music. Students will arrange, compose, improvise, rehearse, and perform music collaboratively in both large and small bands. Modern Band provides opportunities for students to grow as musicians over multiple semesters, with one public performance required each semester outside of class time.

Content: Students will explore:

  • Repertoire spanning a variety of modern music genres.
  • Song forms, rehearsal techniques, and ensemble skills.
  • Music theory, instrument technique, and listening skills.
  • Composition and arranging within a student-centered framework.
  • The repertoire and learning challenges will vary by semester, with students playing an active role in choosing music and shaping the ensemble’s focus.

Homework: Most work will be completed in class. Individual practice outside of class is recommended but not required.

Course Fees / Materials: No additional fees; instruments and equipment are provided in class.
