Learning Recommendations: Students must be enrolled in a yearlong music ensemble class (choir, orchestra, or band).  Additionally, students are required to attend weekly after-school music seminars on Tuesdays from September through May. Approval may be required for students pursuing the non-ensemble IB Music route.

General Description: This course prepares students to complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) Music projects and is ideal for those pursuing an IB certificate or using IB Music as an elective in their IB Diploma. Students engage in a comprehensive study of music theory, history, and analysis through weekly seminar sessions, while also developing skills in musical perception and performance. Participation in a music ensemble or related music course is mandatory, alongside after-school seminars.

  • Study of music history from various cultures and time periods
  • Music theory and analysis
  • Musical perception, including elements, form, and structure
  • Performance in group or solo settings
  • Exploration of music composition and creation through recording and portfolio development

Homework: Students can expect 2-4 hours of homework per week, including preparation for performances, research projects, and music analysis.

Course Fees / Materials: IB exam fees apply, and students are responsible for ensemble-related costs such as outfits and field trips. Financial concerns can be discussed with the ASB bookkeeper or counselor.

Equipment to be provided by Student: Students need earbuds or headphones, laptop, personal musical instruments, and a USB flash drive.
