Learning Recommendations: Students should have an interest in theatrical design and technology, as well as a willingness to work in a project-based, collaborative environment. Mature behavior and safe practices in a shop setting are essential.

General Description: This full-year course focuses on the major areas of theatrical technology and production, providing "behind-the-scenes" experience in theatre. Students will develop skills in set design and construction, lighting and sound technology, costume and makeup design, and stage management. The course also covers aspects of theatre production such as budgeting, marketing, and administration. Students gain hands-on experience and leadership skills to prepare for careers in theatre, entertainment, and media-related industries. Attendance at one High School production is required as part of the class.

Content: 

  • Set and scenic design and construction
  • Lighting and sound design and technology
  • Theatrical rigging and stage management
  • Costume design and theatrical makeup theory/application
  • Production budgeting and contracts
  • Props sourcing and construction
  • Marketing, advertising, and theatre administration
  • Poster and program design

Homework: Students should expect 1-3 hours of work per week, including project-based tasks related to ongoing productions and assignments.

Course Fees / Materials: There is an entry fee for Skyline Drama Productions unless students are directly involved in the production. Financial assistance is available through the ASB bookkeeper or counselor if needed.

Equipment to be provided by Student: Students should wear appropriate clothing for hands-on work, such as painting or working with tools in a shop environment.

Note: This course counts as a Fine Art credit for graduation but may not meet the four-year college admissions requirement for Fine/Visual/Performing Arts. Please check with the university or college that you are interested in attending.
