General Description: Art History introduces students to significant art movements, artists, and works of art from various periods and cultures, spanning from the Paleolithic era to Post-Modernism. This course examines how art reflects and influences social, cultural, and historical developments. Students will engage in critical analysis of visual arts, focusing on content, design, symbols, and techniques while exploring the relationship between art and its historical context.

Content: 

  • Key concepts and vocabulary for analyzing art
  • Art from prehistoric and ancient cultures
  • Greek and Roman art
  • Art of the Far East and the Americas
  • The rise of Christianity and Islamic art during the Middle Ages
  • Renaissance and Baroque art
  • Rococo to Realism, Impressionism, Modernism, and Postmodernism

Homework: Expect approximately 2-4 hours of homework per week, including readings, writing assignments, and art analysis.

Note: This course counts as a Fine Art credit for graduation but may not meet the four-year college admissions requirement for Fine/Visual/Performing Arts. Please check with the university or college that you are interested in attending.
