Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of:

• Studio Art 1 and Studio Art 2, or
• Digital Illustration and Studio Art 2, or
• Sculpture 1 and Sculpture 2

General Description: IB Visual Arts SL is a rigorous course designed for students pursuing the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma or certificate. The course encourages students to push their creative and cultural boundaries, develop problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, and build confidence in their artistic abilities. Students explore various visual art forms, experiment with contemporary practices, and critically reflect on their work. They will create a portfolio of art rather than sitting for a traditional exam, with the option to continue to the IB Visual Arts HL level in the second year.

Content: 

• Development of individual course study in accordance with IB Guidelines
• Exploration and comparison of visual arts from various perspectives and contexts
• Experimentation with diverse media and contemporary practices
• Creation of a body of work for the IB portfolio, including both studio and research components
• Analytical reflection and documentation of the creative process

Homework: Students should expect time outside of class focused on developing their portfolio, researching topics of interest, and reflecting on their creative process.

Equipment to be Provided by Student: Pencil, sketchbook.

Course Fees / Materials: While there is an exam fee for this class students submit a portfolio of work rather than sit for an actual exam in May. Students in their first year (SL) of IB Visual Arts have the option of submitting at the SL level or continuing for a second year with IB Visual Arts HL and submitting their portfolio of work in 12^th grade.
