Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of IB Visual Arts SL is required.

General Description: IB Visual Arts HL is an advanced course designed for students who have completed IB Visual Arts SL and wish to further explore their artistic abilities in more depth. The course emphasizes the development of a broader and deeper body of work, with students encouraged to experiment with new media, techniques, and forms. Students will reflect on how their work is influenced by exposure to other artists and focus on how their creations communicate with an audience. The course culminates in the submission of a portfolio instead of a traditional exam.

Content: 

  • Creation of a larger body of resolved artworks
  • In-depth experimentation with diverse media and techniques
  • Analysis of how other artists influence personal work
  • Critical reflection on how artworks communicate with viewers
  • Completion of an IB HL portfolio for assessment, consisting of studio and research components

Homework: Students should expect 4-6 hours of homework per week, including project development, research, and portfolio preparation.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply. IB exam fees for portfolio submission. Financial concerns can be discussed with the ASB bookkeeper or counselor.

Equipment to be Provided by Student: Pencil, sketchbook.
