Ceramics Art 1 - ART110 

Learning Recommendations: Open to all students in grades 9-12. No prior experience with ceramics or art is required.

General Description: This introductory course explores the art of ceramics through hand-building techniques and the clay-working process. Students will learn foundational skills in creating ceramic forms while developing an understanding of artistic principles and design elements. The course fosters both creativity and technical ability, offering opportunities for growth to students of all skill levels.

Content: 

Introduction to ceramics history, aesthetics, and artistic traditions.

  • Hand-Building Techniques:
    • Pinch, coil, and slab construction methods.
    • Combining methods for advanced projects.
  • Surface Finishing Techniques:
    • Glazing, underglazing, and cold finishes such as paint, marker, and colored pencils.
  • Design Principles:
    • Form, volume, and spatial relationships in clay sculpture.
  • Completion of 6–8 projects, including:
    • 2 pinch projects
    • 1–2 coil projects
    • 2 slab projects
    • 1–2 combination method projects

Homework: Limited to initial brainstorming activities if additional time is needed. All project work is completed in class.
