General Description: Studio Art 1 introduces students to the fundamental principles of art and design. Through hands-on projects, students will explore various media, including pencil, charcoal, pastel, and paint. This course is designed for students seeking a comprehensive fine arts experience and is an excellent entry point for those planning to take additional art courses. The class emphasizes developing technical skills while understanding the elements of art and principles of design.

Content: 

  • Elements and principles of design (line, shape, color, texture, etc.)
  • Drawing and exploring different media (pencil, charcoal, pastel, paint)
  • Introduction to art materials, techniques, and visual communication
  • Some anatomy and form study (human and other bodies)
  • Historical and cultural context of artists and art movements

Homework: Students should expect 0-3 hours of homework per week, typically involving finishing larger projects or planning and gathering references for upcoming assignments.
