Learning Recommendations: Completion of Ceramics Art 1 (previously Sculpture 1) with a grade of C or better is strongly recommended. Prior experience with ceramic clay and glazing techniques is beneficial.

General Description: Ceramics Art 2 provides students with an opportunity to deepen their understanding and practice of ceramic techniques, expanding on skills introduced in Ceramics Art 1. The course includes hand-building, wheel-throwing, and advanced decorative techniques while incorporating design principles and exploring ceramics' cultural, historical, and contemporary contexts.

Content: 

  • Hand-Building Techniques:
    • Advanced pinch, coil, and slab construction.
  • Introduction to Wheel-Throwing:
    • Creation of functional ceramic works using the pottery wheel.
  • Decorative Techniques:
    • Advanced glazing, underglazing, and finishing methods.
  • Art History and Cultural Exploration:
    • Study of ceramics from various cultures, historical periods, and contemporary artists.
  • Projects:
    • 6–8 projects, including:
      • One functional piece using the pottery wheel.
      • 5–7 projects allowing choice between hand-building or wheel-throwing methods.
  • Exploration of historical or contemporary art movements.

Homework: Minimal, limited to initial brainstorming activities if extended time is needed. All project work is completed in class.
