Learning Recommendations: Completion of Ceramics Art 1 and Ceramics Art 2 with a grade of C or better is strongly recommended. Students should have prior experience with hand-building, wheel-throwing, and glazing techniques.

General Description: Ceramics Art 3 is an advanced course that allows students to refine and expand their skills in the ceramic arts. Emphasizing artistic freedom, the course encourages students to explore personal themes and make aesthetic decisions while justifying their creative choices. Students will connect their work to art history and cultural traditions, with a focus on participation, effort, and artistic growth.

Content: 

  • Advanced Techniques:
    • Mastery of hand-building methods (pinch, coil, slab) and wheel-throwing.
    • Exploration of mid-fire (cone 5/6) glazes and advanced surface and structural techniques.
  • Artistic Exploration:
    • Self-directed projects within specific criteria, allowing for creative freedom.
    • Multi-piece projects emphasizing structural integrity and decorative techniques.
  • Cultural and Historical Connections:
    • Study and application of traditional decorative techniques from multiple cultures.
    • Incorporation of elements inspired by historical and contemporary art movements.
  • Projects:
    • 6–8 projects including hand-built and wheel-thrown works, with opportunities for combining techniques.

Homework: Minimal, limited to initial brainstorming activities if extended time is needed. All project work is completed in class.
