IB Theatre Arts SL - ART670/ART672

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of: Successful completion of Theatre Arts 1 or participation in extracurricular theatre is highly recommended. Willingness to perform in front of peers is essential.

General Description: IB Theatre Arts SL is an advanced course designed for experienced students interested in deepening their understanding of theatre through study, creation, and performance. The course covers a wide range of theatre topics, including acting, production, playwriting, and theatre history from a global perspective. Students will participate in performance critiques, research international theatre techniques, and develop their own theatrical pieces. A substantial amount of reading and writing is required for IB assessments, and students must attend Skyline Drama Productions. The course offers the option to continue to IB Theatre Arts HL for a second year.

Content: 

  • Analysis of three plays from genres outside of contemporary American theatre
  • Acting theory and practice
  • Production and design theory
  • Playwriting exercises
  • Theatrical traditions and international theatre research
  • Creating theatre from non-theatre sources
  • Performance and production critiques

Homework: Students should expect substantial reading, writing, and research assignments. They will also need to attend Skyline Drama Productions and complete performance critiques, script analyses, and project-based work.

Note: May also fulfill 12th-grade English credit if taken as a senior (consult with the college of choice).
