IB Theatre Arts HL - ART671/ART673

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of: Successful completion of IB Theatre Arts SL is required. Willingness to perform in front of peers during class is essential.

General Description: IB Theatre Arts HL is an advanced course designed for students deeply committed to the study of theatre. This course builds on the IB Theatre Arts SL foundation and focuses on a comprehensive exploration of acting, directing, production, and playwriting. Students will analyze international theatre practices, critique performances, and develop their own theatrical work. Extensive reading and writing are required for IB assessments, and students must attend Skyline Drama Productions. The course culminates in a portfolio submission instead of a traditional IB exam.

Content: 

  • Analysis of three plays from genres outside of contemporary American theatre
  • Acting theory and practice
  • Production and design theory
  • Critiques of acting and production
  • Creation of theatre from non-theatre sources
  • Playwriting exercises and techniques
  • Study of theatrical traditions and international theatre research

Homework: Students should expect a significant amount of reading, writing, and research assignments for IB assessments. Attendance at Skyline Drama Productions and completion of performance critiques, script analysis, and project-based work are also required.

Note: May also fulfill 12th-grade English credit if taken as a senior (consult with the college of choice).
