Learning Recommendations: It is strongly recommended that students considering this course have at least a B+ in their current English class. This course is taught in a yearlong block with paired semester-long classes Honors Global Studies (Block) and Honors Contemporary World History (Block).

General Description: This year-long English 10 course is designed for students seeking further challenges, willing to read additional and more complex literature, and to undertake complex and extensive writing assignments. Students are expected to work independently, and summer assignments may be required. This rigorous Honors course prepares students for IB courses in English.

Content: This course is aligned with the Washington State Learning Standards for English Language Arts and covers:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Informational and complex narrative reading
  • Analysis of story elements and literary devices
  • Analysis of informational and expository texts
  • Making predictions and inferences
  • Understanding text organizational structures
  • Analysis and selection strategies for planning writing
  • Use of multiple drafts and editing
  • Collaboration and group evaluation
  • Writing for varied audiences, voices, forms, and genres
  • Use of organizational structures

Homework: Students can expect 2-3 hours of homework per week, with individual variances. Units of study are divided into smaller content chunks with due dates, and students complete the homework over time. Daily and weekend homework may be required, but students are given time off during scheduled school breaks.
