Learning Recommendations: Students in this course should be doing well in English with solid writing and grammar skills. They should also be good at meeting deadlines and confident in their writing abilities and organizational skills.

General Description: Journalism is a year-long course for students in grades 9-12. Students will develop and refine interviewing and journalistic writing skills and learn to set goals and meet deadlines in a real production setting. These skills will be applied to the publication of the school's news source. The class operates at a rigorous pace.

Content: The course covers various aspects of journalism, including:

  • Writing news, sports, feature, arts & entertainment, science & technology, and opinion articles
  • Understanding the rights and responsibilities of student media
  • Developing confidence in interacting with peers and staff through the interviewing process

Homework: Students can generally complete work in class if they use their time well. However, some writing for the copy deadline and blog posts may need to be done outside of class.
