Learning Recommendations: Teacher permission is required. This course is designed for students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP); Case Manager Recommendation is also required.

General Description: This course, intended for 12th-grade students, integrates reading comprehension, written and oral language skills, and the process for successful transition into post-graduation careers, training, or educational placements. It blends composition and literature, focusing on critical and comparative analyses of selected literature. Students will primarily write multi-paragraph essays and may also write one or more major research papers. Practical experiences directed at compiling a portfolio for career development will supplement the curriculum.

Content:

  • Development of reading comprehension skills using the textbook Edge by National Geographic and high-interest novels
  • Improvement of writing mechanics and personal communications
  • Enhancement of written expression through real-world projects and examples
  • Integration of reading, writing, and language skills with an emphasis on the process for post-graduation transitions
  • Use of the textbook Writers Inc.: School to Work for practical experiences

Homework: Students should expect to complete assignments and projects that may require work outside of class, focusing on reading comprehension, writing exercises, and portfolio development.
