AP English Language and Composition - EN600A/B

General Description: This year-long course for 11th-grade students follows the College Board’s suggested curriculum, designed to parallel college-level English courses. It integrates critical reading, writing, and thinking skills with a focus on American Literature. Students will develop their abilities to work with language and text with an awareness of rhetorical purpose and strategy. The course emphasizes analytical and argumentative writing, as well as the synthesis of primary and secondary sources. It prepares students for the AP English Language and Composition Exam.

Content:

  • Close reading of fiction and nonfiction writings
  • Rhetorical analysis
  • Development of analytical and argumentative writing skills, for both formal and in-class responses
  • Development of research and synthesis skills
  • Preparation for the AP English Language and Composition exam

Homework: Students should expect an average of 30 minutes of homework per night, which may include 20-30 pages of reading when studying novels and several formal writing responses each semester. Homework schedules are provided well in advance to support time management.

Course Fees / Materials: Students may choose to register for the AP Exam. AP exam fees vary each year, and scholarships are available for qualifying students. Registration for the AP exam takes place in September and October. College credit can be earned with a passing score on the AP exam, but the score qualification and amount of credit earned vary by college.
