IB English: Language and Literature HL 1 (Block) - EN652A/B

Learning Recommendations: There are no formal requirements for students undertaking this course. Experience in writing critical essays about texts is recommended but not necessary. The course accommodates students with varied language profiles and may be multilingual. This course is taught in a block with IB History of the Americas HL 1 (Block).

General Description: This course is designed for 11th-grade students who are highly competent in using English in an academic context. It prepares students to take the International Baccalaureate (IB) Language A: Literature exams. Students will investigate the nature of language and literature and the ways in which they shape and are influenced by context, identity, and culture. They will engage with a range of text types in various media, both literary and non-literary, and apply techniques specific to each text type.

Content:

  • Study of a variety of text types, including literary and non-literary works, across different periods, styles, and contexts
  • Analysis of the relationships between texts and their cultural, historical, and global contexts
  • Application of interpretation, analysis, and evaluation skills in both speaking and writing
  • Development of techniques for analyzing text structures, themes, and stylistic elements
  • Examination of how language and literature contribute to shaping identity and culture
  • Engage with a range of text types in various media and forms, using appropriate techniques for each
  • Develop skills in interpretation, analysis, and evaluation in both speaking and writing
  • Understand the relationships between texts and diverse perspectives, cultural contexts, and global issues
  • Communicate and collaborate confidently and creatively
  • Foster a lifelong interest in and enjoyment of language and literature

Homework: Regular reading assignments and writing tasks are expected. Students should anticipate dedicating time outside of class to complete these assignments, ensuring they keep up with the course material and prepare for discussions and evaluations.

Note: To sit for the IB English exam, students must complete both IB English: Language and Literature HL 1 in 11th grade and IB English: Language and Literature HL 2 in 12th grade.
