IB English: Language and Literature HL 2 - EN661A/B

Learning Recommendations: There are no formal requirements, but students who take this course often have varied language profiles and may be multilingual. Experience in writing critical essays about texts is recommended but not necessary. Students must have completed IB English: Language & Literature HL 1 to be eligible for the IB exam.

General Description: This course is designed for 12th-grade students to support future academic study by developing high social, aesthetic, and cultural literacy, as well as effective communication skills. It focuses on understanding the constructed nature of meanings generated by language and the function of context in this process. This is the second year in a two-year progression, preparing students for the Higher-Level IB exam in May.

Content:

  • Intensive study of both literary and non-literary texts from various periods, styles, and contexts
  • Textual analysis and appreciation of literary elements such as structure, theme, style, figurative language, imagery, symbolism, irony, and tone
  • Examination of how meaning is affected by culturally determined reading practices and the circumstances of production and reception
  • Development of skills in critical thinking and literary appreciation
  • Introduce students to a range of texts from different periods, styles, and genres
  • Develop the ability to engage in close, detailed analysis of texts and make relevant connections
  • Enhance students' powers of expression in both oral and written communication
  • Emphasize the importance of contexts in which texts are written and received
  • Foster appreciation of diverse cultural perspectives and how they construct meaning
  • Promote enjoyment and lifelong interest in language and literature
  • Encourage critical thinking about interactions between text, audience, and purpose

Homework: Regular reading assignments and writing tasks are expected. Students should anticipate dedicating time outside of class to complete these assignments, ensuring they keep up with the course material and prepare for discussions and evaluations.

Note: To sit for the IB English exam, students must complete both IB English: Language and Literature HL 1 in 11th grade and IB English: Language and Literature HL 2 in 12th grade.
IB exam fees apply. Students should see the ASB bookkeeper or their counselor if there are concerns about the cost.
