Shakespeare - ENG425

Learning Recommendations: Open to 11th and 12th graders.

General Description: This one-semester course provides students with an in-depth understanding of at least two major Shakespearean works, typically including one comedy and one tragedy, through performance-based close readings of the plays. Active daily participation and regular writing assignments are designed to engage students and improve their understanding and confidence with this rich and challenging material.

Content:

  • Possible texts include Twelfth Night, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Othello, and a number of sonnets.
  • Students are required to memorize and recite lines in a final scene performance.

Homework: There is little daily homework, but the bulk of the major assessments (both creative and written) will need to be completed outside of class.

Note: This course fulfills an English Language Arts credit required for high school graduation but does not replace the required English course for grades 9–11. This course may not meet the four-year college admissions requirement for a 4th credit of English. Students are encouraged to consult the specific requirements of the colleges or universities where they plan to apply.
