General Description: This introductory semester-long course, suitable for students in grades 9-12, offers students the opportunity to develop and improve their writing techniques and individual style in various forms, such as poetry, short stories, and screenplays. The emphasis is on the writing process, from free-writing through peer editing to final drafts. Students will spend daily class time collaborating and experimenting with new writing techniques.

Content:

• Writing and revising works of fiction in various settings and styles
• Exploration of poetry, short stories, and screenplays
• Study of exemplary representations and authors to gain a fuller appreciation of form and craft
• Emphasis on the writing process, including free-writing, drafting, peer editing, and final revision

Homework: Students should expect regular writing assignments to practice techniques learned in class. Some assignments may require completion outside of class, including drafting and revising pieces for peer review and final submission.
