Literature & Creative Writing - ENG525

Learning Recommendations: Must be a junior or senior. Students should be prepared to analyze literature both verbally and in writing, and be willing to use their creativity to produce written work and share it with peers.

General Description: This senior English elective is designed to facilitate students' creative and imaginative thinking and writing skills. Students will write non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama, developing their skills through various writing projects. The course emphasizes literary elements such as description, characterization, setting, conflict and plot, dialogue, diction, and poetic devices. Students will engage in all steps of the writing process, focusing primarily on writing.

Content:

  • Writing various genres and styles, including poems, vignettes, short stories, and one-act plays
  • Analyzing various fictional, non-fictional, and poetic writings for modeling and instructional purposes
  • Developing creative writing skills using literary elements such as description, characterization, setting, conflict and plot, dialogue, diction, and poetic devices

Homework: Most of the work will be completed in class. There is a minimal amount of homework in this class.

Note: This course fulfills an English Language Arts credit required for high school graduation but does not replace the required English course for grades 9–11.
