General Description: French 1 introduces students to the French language and the diverse cultures of the Francophone world. This beginner-level course focuses on building foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through interactive and meaningful communication. The class is designed following the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, promoting cultural competence and practical communication skills. Instruction is primarily conducted in French, encouraging students to immerse themselves in the language and develop proficiency for everyday communication.

Content:

  • Geography and culture of Francophone regions
  • Greetings, introductions, and basic conversation
  • Describing oneself and others (personality, family, physical traits)
  • Daily activities, school life, and class schedules
  • Discussing hobbies, likes, dislikes, and making plans
  • Food, shopping, and dining in French-speaking cultures
  • Introduction to basic grammar (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and sentence structures)
  • Transportation, locations, and giving directions

Homework: Students should plan for 1-2 hours of homework per week, which includes studying vocabulary, practicing dialogues, and completing exercises online via the course website.
