Mandarin Chinese 1 - FO165A/B

Learning Recommendations: No prior knowledge of Chinese is required.

General Description: This year-long course introduces students to the simplified Mandarin Chinese language and Chinese culture. Students will learn to listen, speak, read, and write in Mandarin, with an emphasis on communicative competence. Through various activities, they will acquire basic proficiency in interacting with native speakers in everyday situations. The course also covers Chinese pronunciation (Pinyin), Chinese typing, classroom expressions, and key cultural practices.

Content:

  • Communication: Basic interactions in Mandarin, including introductions, daily life, and surroundings.
  • Cultures: Exploration of Chinese customs, traditions, and everyday life.
  • Comparisons: Understanding differences and similarities between Chinese and other languages/cultures.
  • Connections: Application of Chinese language skills to other disciplines.
  • Communities: Learning to communicate within multilingual settings.

Homework: Students should plan for 1-2 hours of homework per week, with daily study of 15-20 minutes to reinforce language acquisition.
