Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Mandarin Chinese 3 with a grade of B or higher, or teacher approval.

General Description: Mandarin Chinese 4 is an advanced language course designed to build upon the skills acquired in Chinese 3. The course further enhances students' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing while deepening their understanding of Chinese culture. Students will explore topics such as festivals, history, geography, and modern issues like technology and transportation. They will also learn complex sentence structures, idiomatic expressions, and cultural elements like proverbs and poetry. This course prepares students for future AP or IB Chinese studies.

Content:

  • Communication: School life, health, gender equality, environmental protection, career, and travel.
  • Cultures: Exploration of Chinese festivals, history, geography, and food traditions.
  • Comparisons: Understanding how cultural products and practices reflect a Chinese worldview.
  • Connections: Applying language skills in academic and career-related contexts.
  • Communities: Engaging in global, multilingual communities.

Homework: Students should expect to spend 2.5-3 hours per week on homework.
