Learning Recommendations: Grade 9: C or better in middle school Language Arts class. Grades 10-12: C or better recommended in English class. Consistent practice with flashcards and/or online resources is encouraged. Active participation is essential for success in this course.

General Description: Japanese 1 is a year-long course that introduces students to the fundamentals of the Japanese language and culture. Students develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, including learning hiragana, katakana, and some kanji. The course emphasizes cultural understanding and communication, integrating interactive activities such as pair work, fun projects, and cultural crafts to enhance language acquisition.

  • Family and family tree
  • Hobbies and personal characteristics
  • Dates, times, and the calendar
  • School and health
  • Shopping and counters
  • Colors and commands
  • Transportation
  • Verb conjugation and tenses
  • Typing in Japanese

Homework: Students are expected to spend approximately 1-2 hours per week on assignments, including worksheets, cultural portfolio work, and occasional projects.
