Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of American Sign Language 2 with a grade of C- or better, equivalent coursework from another institution, or proficiency demonstrated through a state-approved assessment.

General Description: American Sign Language 3 is a performance-based course designed to advance students' fluency and deepen their understanding of Deaf culture. Students will develop advanced conversational skills, explore linguistic nuances, and learn about careers that utilize ASL. The course emphasizes active communication, cultural immersion, and practical application of ASL in real-world contexts.

Content:

  • Advanced Communication Skills:
    • Using idiomatic expressions, forming opinions, and mastering conversational fluency.
    • Understanding and adapting to regional and cultural variations in ASL.
  • Deaf Culture and Community:
    • Immersing in Deaf culture through appropriate behaviors, norms, and historical context.
    • Exploring current events and issues relevant to the Deaf community.
  • ASL Linguistics:
    • Learning about ASL transcription, history, and linguistic evolution.
  • Real-World Applications:
    • Developing narratives, debating issues, and presenting using ASL.
    • Exploring ASL-related careers in education, healthcare, law, and other fields.

Homework: Students should expect 3-5 hours per week, including vocabulary practice, video comprehension, signing exercises, and project work.
