AP Spanish Language and Culture - FO610A/B

Learning Recommendations: Students should have a B or better in Spanish 3, Advanced Spanish Conversation and Culture, or Spanish 3 with teacher permission. Students should be comfortable speaking Spanish consistently in class and be motivated to develop their language skills.

General Description: AP Spanish Language and Culture is a rigorous, year-long course designed to parallel third-year college-level Spanish. It is ideal for students planning to continue studying Spanish at the university level. This course emphasizes advanced proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish, along with a deep exploration of Hispanic culture in both historical and contemporary contexts. Students will engage with a variety of authentic materials such as books, movies, articles, and music, and will be prepared to take the AP Spanish exam in May.

Content:

  • Grammar & Vocabulary: Comprehensive review of grammar, syntax, and verb tenses equivalent to a 300-level college course.
  • AP Themes:
    • Global Challenges
    • Science and Technology
    • Contemporary Life
    • Personal and Public Identities
    • Families and Communities
    • Beauty and Aesthetics
  • Cultural Exploration: Students will explore the culture of Spanish-speaking people using authentic media, while also making connections to real-world issues.

Homework: Students should spend about 2 hours per week on homework, which may include preparing presentations, reviewing grammar, and practicing reading and listening skills independently. Regular engagement with authentic Spanish media outside of class is strongly encouraged to build language proficiency.

Note: Students will be thoroughly prepared for the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam. College credit may be earned based on the AP exam score, with requirements varying by institution. AP exam fees apply, and scholarships are available for eligible students.
