General Description: Spanish 4 CHS is an advanced, college-level Spanish course focused on achieving fluency, accuracy, and cultural understanding. This immersive course is conducted entirely in Spanish, emphasizing the development of interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational communication. Students will engage with in-depth themes, cultural topics, and current events while connecting language study to other disciplines, fostering a comprehensive grasp of the Spanish-speaking world.

Content:

  • Personal Relationships: Discuss marital status, emotional states, personalities, and feelings.
  • Urban Life: Learn about city life, directions, public signs, and activities.
  • Media and Influence: Explore the impact of cinema, television, and news media.
  • Family and Generational Dynamics: Examine family roles and cross-generational interactions.
  • Environmental Issues: Study nature, ecology, and environmental topics.
  • Grammar and Expression:
    • Present tense, habitual actions, and immediate future events.
    • Differences between ser and estar for describing qualities and states.
    • Past events with the preterite and imperfect.
    • Expressing will, influence, doubt, and denial using the subjunctive.
    • Commands and formal/informal advice.
    • Future and conditional for expressing conjecture and hypothetical scenarios.
  • Writing Practice: Compose various types of formal and informal correspondence, advice letters, and stories.

Homework: Students should expect to spend 2-3 hours per week on homework, including vocabulary and grammar review, reading, listening comprehension, and writing assignments.

Course Fees / Materials: None

Note: Students may earn 5 university credits from Bellevue College’s College in the High School program. The university credit grade will be based on chapter tests, midterms, finals, and an oral interview.
