IB French SL - FO650A/B

Learning Recommendations: Completion of French 3 or equivalent proficiency. Students should have a solid grasp of complex tenses, including the subjunctive, and be prepared to engage in 30 minutes of homework per night on average.

General Description: IB French SL is a year-long advanced course designed for students committed to deepening their understanding of French grammar, language fluency, and francophone cultures. Emphasizing an immersive, French-only environment, the course prepares students to succeed on the IB French Standard Level exam in May. Students will improve their conversational, reading, and writing skills and explore global issues and cultural diversity within the francophone world. Enrollment is open to students aiming to advance their French skills, with or without pursuing the IB diploma.

Content:

  • Major themes: Identities, Life Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing of the Planet
  • Topics include media and communication, social relationships, cultural traditions, health, science, technology, and environmental issues
  • Practice with various French texts: newspaper articles, essays, dialogues, and other authentic materials

Homework: Regular assignments averaging 2-3 hours per week, including essays, presentations, and speaking/listening practice.

Course Fees / Materials: IB exam fee required for students taking the IB French SL exam. Students will also need a 3-ring binder, lined paper, and may purchase one or two short novels ($10-$15 each).
