Introduction to Sports Medicine - IN500A/B

Learning Recommendations: While not required, it is recommended that students complete Biology prior to enrolling in this course.

General Description: This course introduces students to the foundational knowledge and skills needed for healthcare professions, with an emphasis on sports medicine. Ideal for students interested in medicine, biology, or allied healthcare fields, this course explores human anatomy, physiology, and the prevention and treatment of sports-related injuries. Students gain hands-on experience through observations and job shadows, which connect classroom learning to real-world healthcare settings.

Content: 

  • Medical terminology.
  • Anatomy and physiology of key body systems (e.g., integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, digestive).
  • Emergency medicine basics, including CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
  • Nutrition, strength and conditioning, and sports psychology.
  • Preventative techniques such as taping, wrapping, and safety precautions.
  • Rehabilitation techniques and modalities.
  • Study of conditions and injuries common in athletics.

Homework: Homework typically involves reviewing daily topics or working on larger projects over multiple days. On average, students can expect less than 10 minutes of homework per night with effective time management.
