Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation - IN505A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Introduction to Sports Medicine is recommended.

General Description: Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation is a yearlong course for students interested in deepening their knowledge of sports medicine, with a focus on injury assessment and treatment techniques. Building on introductory skills, students explore advanced topics in emergency care, injury mechanisms, anatomy, and physiology through classroom instruction and hands-on learning. Enrollment in this course requires concurrent enrollment in the Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation Internship, where students gain practical experience working with athletes under the supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer.

Content: 

  • Anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology for each body region (ankle, knee, shoulder, etc.)
  • Mechanisms of athletic injuries and their evaluation
  • Signs, symptoms, and immediate care of injuries
  • Preventative techniques such as taping, wrapping, and safety protocols
  • Athletic equipment fitting and emergency procedures

Homework: Classroom work includes around 20 minutes per day of review and completion of in-class assignments. Out-of-class requirements include 180 hours per year of after-school observation (about 5 hours per week) and an additional online learning component.
