Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation Internship - IN511A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Introduction to Sports Medicine and concurrent enrollment in Advanced Sports Medicine: Evaluation is required.

General Description: The Advanced Sports Medicine: Internship is a yearlong, hands-on experience for students enrolled in Advanced Sports Medicine courses. Students support a high school sports team outside school hours, providing care to athletes before, during, and after practices and competitions. Responsibilities include injury prevention, treatment, and assistance with therapeutic practices. The internship requires 180 hours of supervised fieldwork, journal entries, and reflections. Completion of this internship qualifies students for a Washington Vocational Sports Medicine Association (WVSMA) certificate.

Content: 

  • Field experience with a high school sports team
  • Injury prevention and athlete care before, during, and after events
  • Internships in healthcare settings such as physical therapy clinics, hospitals, or training rooms
  • Exposure to specialty areas including chiropractic care, EMT support, strength training, dietetics, and more

Homework: Students are required to complete 180 hours of internship experience outside of school, which includes tracking hours, submitting a journal, and writing reflections.

Course Fees / Materials: No equipment is required to be provided by the student.
