General Description: The magic of theatre begins with the tech crew! In this course students will enjoy exploring what goes on backstage. Through hands-on activities and projects students will gain experience in rigging, property design, construction, organization, basic flat construction, elements of lighting and light board operation, scenic painting techniques, stage management, and the overall care of the theatre. Students may also acquire practical hours through designing lights for concerts, acting as the light board operator, helping to build sets for productions, acting as stage manager for school productions, etc. Careers will be explored through interaction with professional theatre companies, guest artists, field trips, and fieldwork. The course is designed to prepare students for actual work in performance related fields.

Homework: Occasional observational, reading and research projects. Students will be given ample time to complete work during class, but might need additional time outside of the school day.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply.

Equipment to be provided by Student: Appropriate clothing for class work involving painting, sawdust, etc.

Note: This course counts as a Fine Art credit for graduation but does not meet the four-year college admissions requirement for Fine/Visual/Performing Arts.
