Applied Algebra 1 - MT110A/B

Learning Recommendations: Applied Algebra 1 is equivalent to Algebra 1. This course is recommended for students who have completed Math 3 and are beginning their high school math sequence.

General Description: Applied Algebra 1 focuses on the application of mathematics and statistics to solve functional problems in fields such as engineering and the applied sciences. This course covers traditional Algebra 1 concepts and emphasizes practical applications. It includes solving simple equations and inequalities, linear equations, systems of equations, functions, exponents, probability, quadratics, and factoring.

Content: Critical areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Math Processes
  • Mathematical Expressions
  • Solving Equations
  • Solving Inequalities
  • Linear Equations
  • Functions
  • Systems of Equations
  • Attributes of Exponents
  • Probability
  • Quadratics and Factoring

Homework: Homework is assigned almost every night and can vary between 10 minutes and 35 minutes depending on the student's prior knowledge and effective use of class time. Studies suggest that daily small doses of practice are better for learning math. Practice problems revisit concepts learned in class to solidify understanding. Homework is intended for practice and feedback rather than assessment. Students typically review homework in class the next day.
