Personal Finance - MT305A/B

Learning Recommendations: Designed for students who have completed Algebra and Geometry.

Note: This course meets the graduation requirement for a math class after completing Algebra 1 and Geometry.

General Description: Personal Finance is an algebra-based CTE course designed to build upon prior math knowledge and apply algebra concepts to real-world financial situations. The course covers investing, banking, credit, income taxes, insurance, automobile ownership, renting an apartment, employment, retirement and household budgeting. Students will learn step-by-step strategies to understand financial concepts like the time value of money, evaluating the best banks and credit cards, making financial decisions, calculating loan payments and interest, investing in the stock market, and building a business plan by understanding costs, profits, and break-even points.

Content:

  • Real-world situations represented through functions, graphs, tables, statistics, and regressions.
  • Functions: linear, quadratic, exponential, piecewise, and others.
  • Systems of equations and inequalities.
  • Exponential growth and decay.
  • Use of Excel and online applications.

Homework: Assigned practice problems in a workbook, typically completed within 30 minutes. Time is often given in class to start assignments. Projects and tests are done in class.
