AP Calculus AB - MT600A/B

Prerequisites: Must have completed Pre-Calculus prior to taking this class.

Learning Recommendations: Designed for students with a B average or better on assessments in Pre-Calculus (CHS) or AP Pre-Calculus. Strong foundation in algebra and pre-calculus concepts. Ability to problem solve, think critically and creatively, persevere through challenges, and work quickly. Interest in working on rigorous and demanding problems. 

General Description: AP Calculus AB is a one-year course that follows the College Board's curriculum, providing an understanding of calculus concepts and experience with its methods and applications. This course covers topics typically included in the first two quarters of college calculus, preparing students for the AP Calculus AB exam.

College Credit: Students may take the AP test at the end of this course.  Colleges may award credit to students passing the AP test.  Bellevue College offers 5 Math credits for Math& 151. Students should verify the specific policy regarding AP Calculus credits at their colleges of interest.

Content:

  1. Functions, Graphs, and Limits
    • Analysis of graphs
    • Limits of functions (including one-sided limits)
    • Asymptotic and unbounded behavior
    • Continuity as a property of functions
  2. Derivatives
    • Concept of the derivative
    • Derivative at a point
    • Derivative as a function
    • Second derivatives
    • Applications of derivatives
    • Computation of derivatives
  3. Integrals
    • Interpretations and properties of definite integrals
    • Applications of integrals
    • Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
    • Techniques of antidifferentiation
    • Applications of antidifferentiation
    • Numerical approximations to definite integrals

Homework: Nightly practice problems ranging from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the student and topic. Emphasis on small daily doses of practice to solidify learning. Homework is a portion of the grade to encourage practice and problem-solving.

Note: AP courses provide the opportunity to earn college credits. Students must register for and take the AP exam, with fees varying each year. Successful completion can earn college credit, subject to the policies of individual colleges.
