Symphonic Band - MU110A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Concert Band - MU100A/B or at least two years of prior band experience, private instruction, or teacher approval. Audition required. 

General Description: Symphonic Band is a year-long elective designed for brass and woodwind (and percussion – if no Percussion Ensemble class is offered) students seeking to advance their musical and technical skills. The course emphasizes ensemble performance and prepares students for potential Wind Ensemble membership. Performances are a key component, with students participating in concerts, festivals, athletic events, parades, and community functions. Membership also includes mandatory participation in marching and pep bands, with occasional before or after-school practices.

Content: 

  • Perform intermediate to advanced high school band literature
  • Develop ensemble and sectional rehearsal techniques
  • Refine pitch, rhythmic, and tone production skills
  • Study some music theory and historical context of selected works
  • Engage in clinics and contests to further technical skills

Homework: Recommended 30 minutes individual practice per day as needed, depending on individual student goals and performance schedules.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply. ASB card required. Instrument rental available for large instruments; repair fees apply. Concert attire purchase may be necessary; inquire with director.
