AP Music Theory - MU600A/B

Learning Recommendations: Ability to read sheet music is required. Students should be comfortable sight-reading and performing music independently. Previous music class experience is recommended but not required.

General Description: AP Music Theory is a rigorous and engaging course equivalent to a first-year college music theory class. Designed for students that are passionate about music, this course explores how music is constructed and analyzed. Emphasis is placed on developing aural skills, sight-singing, composition, and theoretical understanding of tonal music, culminating in the AP Music Theory Exam in May.

Content: 

Students will explore the following topics:

  • Music Fundamentals:
    • Pitch, rhythm, meter, and expressive elements.
    • Scales, key signatures, melody, timbre, and texture.
    • Triads and sevenths chords.
  • Harmony and Voice Leading:
    • Chord progressions, cadence, and phrase structure.
    • Embellishments, motives, and melodic devices.
  • Modes and Forms:
    • Modal scales and structural analysis of musical compositions.

Homework: Students will be provided with class time to complete assigned class work. Any work not completed during class should be completed as homework.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply. Provided materials include textbooks, a binder with staff paper, and additional resources.
