Learning Recommendations: None; this course is designed as an introduction to guitar, and no prior experience is required.

General Description: Guitar 1 is a semester-long course for beginners interested in learning to play the guitar. Students will learn foundational guitar-playing techniques and types of music notation. The curriculum covers a range of different musical styles and offers opportunity for student choice. Opportunities to play in guitar ensembles and may participate in a performance outside school hours.

Content: 

  • Basic guitar techniques: strumming, chords, scales, and picking techniques
  • Notation reading including chord symbols, tabs, lead sheets, and standard notation
  • Learn songs and melodies by ear
  • Study and perform a variety of musical genres
  • Students practice and perform individually and in groups

Homework: All coursework is complete during class time. Home practice is encouraged.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply.  Guitars may be provided.
