Learning Recommendations: Completion of Guitar 1 or teacher permission.

General Description: Guitar 2 is a semester-long course designed for students who wish to expand on the skills developed in Guitar 1. This course introduces advanced techniques, including finger picking, reading standard notation, and playing various barre chords. Students will also explore songwriting and have opportunities to study guitar styles of personal interest. Students may have the opportunity to perform outside of school hours.

Content: 

  • Basic guitar techniques: strumming, chords, scales, and picking techniques
  • Notation reading including chord symbols, tabs, lead sheets, and standard notation
  • Learn songs and melodies by ear
  • Study and perform a variety of musical genres
  • Students practice and perform individually and in groups

Homework: Most work will be done in class, but all students are encouraged to practice at home each day. Students will also be assigned playing tests to complete both in class and at home.

Course Fees / Materials: Students may need a folder or binder and manuscript paper; guitars, strings, picks, and capos are provided. An acoustic guitar, case, picks, clip-on tuner, and metronome are recommended if possible. Financial assistance is available.
