Learning Recommendations: Open to all students in good academic standing who are able to participate in physical education.

General Description: Naval Science 1 is the first course in the four-year NJROTC program, emphasizing leadership development, citizenship, and understanding of maritime heritage and naval operations. Students engage in classroom and practical training, including military drill and leadership labs, with activities like field trips, team competitions, and physical fitness. The course encourages personal responsibility, respect, and self-discipline while offering a foundation in naval knowledge. Academically qualified students may be eligible for Naval Academy or NROTC scholarship nominations. Participation carries no military service obligation, but may provide advancement benefits for enlistees.

Content: 

  • Fundamentals of Navy organization, U.S. maritime history, and naval missions
  • Introduction to military drill, including unarmed and armed drill team options
  • Leadership lab exercises focusing on personal responsibility and team dynamics
  • Maritime geography, seamanship, oceanography, and health education
  • Participation in NJROTC activities such as marksmanship, orienteering, Color Guard, and academic and cyber teams

Homework: Minimal; primarily in-class learning and practical application, with occasional assignments.
