General Description: Marine Biology is a laboratory course that fulfills a science requirement for graduation and meets the lab-based science course criteria for college entrance requirements as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council. This course uses the McGraw Hill textbook "Marine Biology," which is utilized in both high school and college settings. It provides an in-depth study of the chemical, physical, and geological aspects of marine environments, as well as the diversity and anatomy of marine organisms.

Content: Students will explore a variety of marine science topics, including:

  • Marine Environment: Chemical, physical, and geological aspects.
  • Marine Ecology: Ecology of various sea zones and marine communities.
  • Marine Organisms: Diversity, anatomy, and characteristics of major marine ecosystems.
  • Aquatic Groups: Exploration of groups such as aquatic insects, fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.
  • Human Impact: The effects of human activities on ecosystems and populations of organisms.

Skills Taught:

  • Laboratory techniques specific to marine biology.
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Scientific inquiry and model development.
  • Dissection techniques.

Homework: Students are expected to complete outside work, including independent research, projects, and occasional homework assignments.
