Physics - SC225A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Physics Laboratory Methods or Biology. Successful completion of Algebra 1 and Geometry (recommended B or better in both courses). Concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or higher. Proficiency in using computer software for word processing and spreadsheets. Proficiency in graphing and data analysis.

General Description: Physics is a year-long laboratory course that fulfills the science requirements for graduation and university entrance. It aims to provide students with an understanding of the fundamental principles of the physical world and an appreciation of various phenomena experienced in daily life. The course emphasizes lab skills, scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving. Physics is a quantitative science, and students will engage in a significant amount of mathematical work. This course meets one college prep science requirement as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) as a lab-based and algebra-based science course.

Content: Students will actively engage in learning and experiencing the following topics:

  • Physical Measurement: Methods and applications.
  • Mechanics: Principles of motion, forces, and equilibrium.
  • Conservation Laws: Energy & Momentum.
  • Wave Mechanics: Understanding waves and their properties.

Additional topics may include:

  • Thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, modern physics, lunar astronomy, geophysics, and electromagnetic radiation. Optics: Color, light, and sound.

Homework: Students will complete homework via WebAssign, an online homework service. Each unit's homework will be posted one week before their due date, and each assignment should take about one hour to complete. Students are expected to manage their time wisely to complete assignments promptly.

Course Fees / Materials: Course fees may apply. Students to provide a scientific function calculator (TI-83+, TI-84, TI-Nspire, or TI-30XIIS recommended).
