General Description: Environmental Systems 1 is a year-long laboratory course that fulfills the science requirements for graduation and university entrance. This course is centered on field-based data collection and scientific, inquiry-based lab work, requiring students to engage with the scientific process. It meets one college prep science requirement as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) as a lab-based science course.

Content: Students will explore a variety of environmental science topics, including:

  • Foundations: Basic lab skills and scientific methods.
  • The Living World: Interactions among species and resources, biodiversity.
  • Population: Estimation methods, population interactions with humans.
  • Land and Water Use: Urbanization, forestry, agriculture, mining, and water management.
  • Energy Resources and Consumption: Different energy sources and their uses.
  • Pollution: Air and water pollution, waste generation, disposal, and health risks.
  • Global Change: Impacts and implications of global environmental changes.

Homework: Students are expected to complete homework assignments, which may include independent research, data analysis, and preparation for presentations. Regular review and study are recommended to keep up with the course content.
