  • Successful completion of Biology
  • Successful completion of Algebra 1 (recommended B or better) and concurrent enrollment in Geometry or higher.
  • Proficiency in using computer software for word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Proficiency in lab techniques, problem-solving, and critical thinking.

General Description:

  • Chemistry is a quantitative science and students do a significant amount of math.
  • This course fulfills one (1) college prep science requirement as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) as a lab-based and algebra-based science course.
  • This is a year-long laboratory course, which fulfills the science requirements for graduation and university entrance.
  • Emphasis on lab skills and scientific inquiry.
  • Emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving.

Content: Students will actively engage in learning and experiencing the following topics:

  • Structure of Matter: including atomic theory, periodic table, chemical bonding with formula writing and equations, molecular structure.
  • States of Matter: characteristics & what changes occur between phases.
  • Reaction types: chemical & nuclear.
  • Thermodynamics: energy changes in chemical and physical reactions.
  • Application of chemistry in daily life and environment.
  • Stoichiometry: conversions between units and application to reactions.
  • Gas Laws:  looking at the relationship between pressure, temperature, volume, and moles.

Homework: Students should expect to spend an average of 20 minutes per day on homework or 100 minutes per week, including practice problems, writing lab reports, or studying. The time required may vary depending on tests, student ability, and productivity during class.
