Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Chemistry Laboratory Methods, Physics Laboratory Methods, or Biology Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 1. Proficiency in lab techniques, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Proficiency in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets

General Description: This lab-based course explores the scientific foundations of forensics, a cross-disciplinary field utilizing the scientific method and principles from physics, chemistry, and biology. Students will learn to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence to solve crimes, using techniques that encompass a variety of forensic sub-fields. The course covers mature themes and involves the examination of potentially graphic images and scenarios. It fulfills college prep requirements as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) as a lab-based science course.

  • Crime scene investigation and physical evidence analysis
  • Properties of matter and glass analysis
  • Forensic toxicology and drug analysis
  • Forensic serology and DNA profiling
  • Trace evidence: hair and fiber analysis
  • Blood spatter analysis
  • Forensic anthropology and entomology
  • Fingerprint analysis
  • Firearms, tool marks, and impression evidence
  • Document examination
  • Careers in forensic science
  • Famous case studies

Homework: Students should expect regular assignments that reinforce class activities and readings. Homework will include lab reports, research projects, and preparation for in-class discussions and presentations.
