Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Chemistry Laboratory Methods, Physics Laboratory Methods, and Biology. Successful completion of Algebra 1 and concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2. Proficiency in lab techniques, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Proficiency in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets

General Description: This lab-based course delves into the scientific basis of forensics, a rich and cross-disciplinary field that applies principles from physics, chemistry, and biology. Students will learn to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence to solve crimes, utilizing various forensic techniques. The course covers a wide array of forensic sub-fields and includes a unit on careers in forensic science. This course meets the requirements for lab-based and Algebra-based science courses for college entrance as outlined by the Washington Student Achievement Council.

This comprehensive course will provide students with an in-depth understanding of forensic science, preparing them for potential careers in the field or further studies in related disciplines.

  • Crime scene investigation and physical evidence analysis
  • Properties of matter and glass analysis
  • Forensic toxicology and drug analysis
  • Forensic serology and DNA profiling
  • Trace evidence: hair and fiber analysis
  • Blood spatter analysis
  • Forensic anthropology and entomology
  • Fingerprint analysis
  • Firearms, tool marks, and impression evidence

Homework: Homework will include tasks not completed in class, group projects, and studying for assessments. Students are expected to manage their time effectively to complete these assignments outside of class.
