Learning Recommendations: Students must have completed IB Biology HL 1, preferably with a grade of B or better. Proficient in the use of computer software for word processing and spreadsheets. Completion of Chemistry is recommended

General Description: This IB course builds on and expands the curriculum of IB Biology HL 1, preparing students for university-level biology courses. It is the second of a two-year progression that culminates in the Higher Level IB Biology exam in May. This course fulfills one college prep science requirement as outlined by the Higher Education Board of the State of Washington (HEC Board) as a lab-based science course.

Content: Students will actively engage in learning and experiencing the following topics:

• Human Anatomy and Physiology, including:
• Excretion
• Neurobiology
• Muscular systems
• Immune system
• Cellular respiration
• Photosynthesis
• Ecology and human impact on ecosystems
• Plant science
• Completion of an independent research investigation (the "internal assessment")

The sequence and specific content units may vary based on student interest and preference. Students sitting for the IB exam in May should expect to spend significant independent preparation time outside of class.

Homework: Students should expect regular homework assignments that reinforce class activities and readings. This includes practice packets, article readings and analyses, and lab activity investigation write-ups. Independent preparation time outside of class is essential, especially for students sitting the IB exam in May.

• Scientific calculator (TI-30XIIS recommended)

Note: Skyline offers the IB Biology exam at the Higher Level only. To sit for the IB Biology exam, students must complete both IB Biology HL 1 and IB Biology HL 2.
