IB Chemistry SL - SC660A/B

Learning Recommendations: Proficiency in fundamental lab techniques and lab safety. Adeptness in the use of word processing software and Excel. Successful completion of Algebra 1 and Geometry. At least concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 is strongly recommended.

General Description: This fast-paced, first-year high school chemistry course satisfies the Standard Level (SL) requirements of the IB Diploma program and prepares students for a university-level chemistry course. It prepares students to sit for the Standard Level IB Chemistry exam in May. Students will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for chemistry concepts. This course fulfills one college prep science requirement as outlined by the Higher Education Board of the State of Washington (HEB Board) as a lab-based or algebra-based science course.

Content: Students will actively engage in learning and experiencing the following topics:

  • Methods and applications of physical measurement
  • Physical and chemical properties
  • Atomic structure
  • Molecular shapes and structure
  • Electrochemistry
  • Acids and bases
  • Oxidation and reduction
  • Equilibrium
  • Organic chemistry
  • Web-based work

Homework: Students should expect regular homework assignments that reinforce class activities and readings. This includes practice problems, reading assignments, and lab reports. Independent preparation time outside of class is essential, especially for students sitting the IB exam in May.

Equipment to be Provided by Student:

  • Bound composition notebook
  • Scientific calculator (TI-30XIIS recommended)
