IB Physics HL 1 - SC670A/B

Learning Recommendations: Successful completion of Chemistry Laboratory Methods and Physics Laboratory Methods. Proficiency in the use of word processing software and Excel. Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 is encouraged

General Description: In this course, students will explore the fundamental principles that govern the physical world. This is a relatively fast-paced course designed to prepare students for university-level physics courses. It is the first of a two-year progression that prepares students for the Higher Level IB Physics exam in May of their senior year. This course fulfills one college prep science requirement as outlined by the Higher Education Board of the State of Washington (HEC Board) as a lab-based or algebra-based science course.

Content: Students will actively engage in learning and experiencing the following topics:

  • Methods and applications of physical measurement and measurement uncertainties
  • Mechanics (topics such as uniform accelerated motion, forces, work and energy, momentum)
  • Rotational Mechanics and Circular Motion
  • Gravitation
  • Special Relativity
  • Oscillations and Mechanical Waves

Homework: Students should expect regular homework assignments that reinforce class activities and readings. This includes practice problems, reading assignments, and lab reports. Independent preparation time outside of class is essential, especially for students sitting the IB exam in May.

Equipment to be Provided by Student:

  • 1” or 1.5” 3-ring binder dedicated to IB Physics
  • Scientific calculator (graphing calculator is OK but not required; TI-30XIIS recommended)

Course Fees: Course fees may apply

Additional Information:

Note: Skyline offers the IB Physics exam at the Higher Level only. To sit for the IB Physics exam, students must take both IB Physics HL 1 and IB Physics HL 2 in 11th and 12th grades.

IB Physics HL 1 offers a rigorous, college-level curriculum that challenges students and prepares them for further studies in physics and engineering. The course provides valuable problem-solving and analytical skills through hands-on and inquiry-based learning experiences.
